National work Parents 1st UK www.parents1st.org.uk Pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent is a life-changing event. For many, it is a very welcome, exciting time but unfortunately, that is not always the same for everyone. From years of research and experience, we know that perinatal peer support makes a unique and special contribution to the wellbeing of mothers, fathers, babies and families, and this is why at Parents 1st we have developed a new website to help peer support programmes flourish in every community. It can be daunting to get a new peer support programme off the ground and to keep it going. Our new website guides you through every stage of the journey with useful tips, guidance and a wealth of free resources that have been generously shared by our programme in Essex and adapted and put into action by our affiliate programmes in the Isle of Dogs and Derby. Based on clear and strong evidence of what works across the UK, and other countries too, these tools will help you to ‘hit the ground running’ as well as create a place where practitioners, volunteers and parents can connect and share ideas, resources and experiences too. Sign up to our monthly e-newsletter and keep up to date with news from this peer support community! Derby Community Parent Programme Derby Community Parent Programme CIC (DCPP) is responsible for delivering perinatal peer support to Derby & Derbyshire residents. It was formed in 2016 and previously sat within a wider organisation before branching out to become a standalone entity in June 2021. The programme model is based upon that of Parents 1st and is carefully shaped according to the local need. Trained volunteers provide regular Community Peer Support through supportive community activities, both online and face to face and in all relevant areas of the Royal Derby Hospital along with one-to-one pregnancy and birth support in the homes of new and expectant parents. Our inspirational volunteers were awarded the national NHS Unsung Hero Award in 2020. You can also see us in action on the ITV Documentary ‘Becoming Mum’ with Sheridan Smith – you can watch this here. Find out more about DCPP here and follow us on Twitter @derbycpp
