Parent's 1st Essex specialises in effective volunteering and peer support during the key life change of pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. We are now looking for a new chair who will play an important role in building a strong local board to lead the organisation in delivering its new strategy.

All reasonable expenses will be paid. The successful candidate will be paid £2,000 per annum.

What We're Looking For?

Commitment and passion for the work and ethos of Parents 1st, with the ability to keep parents and babies at the centre of all decision making;

· Previous experience of chairing an organisation, with ability to lead discussions ensuring different perspectives are taken into consideration;

· Negotiation and conflict management skills

· Knowledge of legal frameworks surrounding charities and CICs and experience of leading a board of trustees/directors;

· Willingness and ability to devote time to the governance and promotion of the organisation;

· Strategic vision and successful business planning experience;

· Ability to think and act creatively, demonstrating forward thinking and good judgement;

· Understanding and acceptance of the legal and compliance duties, responsibilities and liabilities of directorship;

· Ability to lead, motivate, inspire and work effectively as a member of the board and the wider team;

· Commitment to peer support and volunteering;

· Fundraising and income generation experience;

· Willingness to engage with the wider voluntary sector and other networks.

Role Requirements

· Ensure clarity & commitment to the vision, ethos & strategic direction, keeping the needs of parents/babies at the centre of our work;
· Set, direct & review the strategic direction & business plan;
· Set & maintain high standards of governance, compliance & financial probity, risk management & overall performance;
· Support the achievement of financial sustainability & ensuring strategic oversight of finances & resources;
· Ensure operational & financial efficiency;
· Support & line managing the CEO.
· Work with Parents 1st UK to maintain/improve the delivery of evidence based, quality peer support

1. Leadership
· Develop & support the board of directors in an inclusive manner, leading discussions that ensure diverse views are taken into consideration & the whole board is able to play a full & effective part in the governance, decision making & direction of the organisation;
· Ensure clear strategic direction, policy, goals & performance targets are set, monitored & reviewed annually;
· Guide & line manage the CEO, respecting & supporting their role;
· Represent the organisation as an informed & influential ambassador;
· Ensure the organisation is providing excellent standards of service;
· Identify & lead change.

2. Governance
· Review & ensure best practice & compliance of the governing document to reflect the new status & role of the organisation;
· Ensure Parents 1st conducts its affairs in accordance with its governing document, charity law, employment law, health & safety legislation, fundraising best practice & all other relevant legislation & regulation;
· Ensure governance complies with the NCVO Code of Good Governance 05;
· Ensure directors understand & carry out responsibilities in relation to safeguarding children & vulnerable adults;
· Build a strong board & review its composition & performance including the diversity & skills of its members & act on actions identified;
· Oversee & monitor delegated duties & responsibilities, setting appropriate delegated authorities;
· Ensure regulatory, legal, contractual & reporting obligations are met;
· Ensure best practice in communications & involvement of the community & other stakeholders.

3. Finance & Administration
To lead the board in:
· Setting a strategy that supports the financial viability of the organisation;
· Supporting the Chief Executive in ensuring the effective administration;
· Ensuring the proper & efficient use of the organisation’s funds & assets;
· Setting & monitoring annual & project budgets & monitoring cashflow;
· Assisting the Chief Executive to identify, mitigate & monitor risks to the assets & reserves of the organisation, including all tendering, contracting & major funding activities;
· Ensuring effective controls & plans are in place & implemented to achieve financial plan objectives, including development & implementation fundraising plans & activities.

4. Human Resources
· Oversee the appointment of the CEO;
· Establish a constructive working relationship with the CEO, appraise & provide support to them including regular meetings & joint development of the board agendas;
· Lead the process for setting & monitoring achievement of Chief Executive objectives & performance indicators;
· Ensure Parents 1st has effective, best practice human resource policies & procedures which are monitored & reviewed
· Provide support & encouragement to staff & volunteers, with due regard to the management role of the CEO & line management structures;
· Ensure a sound whistleblowing process is in place

5. Strategy and Business Planning
· Oversee the planning of the annual cycle of board meetings & agendas;
· Contribute knowledge & expertise to lead & grow a small business;
· Plan for a sustainable future, develop & set strategic & business plans & assist with the generation of new business & income streams;
· To monitor progress against the strategic objectives and business plans
· To ensure key issues and matters are brought to the board and actioned.
